January 2019

There are various gardens which are within driving distance which have wonderful winter gardens, I can recommend Anglesey Abbey for inspiration, scent and stems, and Harlow Carr, both would be good between January and March.

Closer to home, many of our gardens are having special Snowdrop opening days in February, and I am giving those links here so that you can check specific opening times.  Hodsock Priory just over the border in Nottinghamshire has a splendid collection, and is well worth a visit. Easton Walled Gardens is now well established as a place not to be missed at snowdrop time.  Brightwater Gardens is one of the countries newest snowdrop and winter interest gardens. Snowdrops galore at Gunby Hall can also be enjoyed with guided walks, booking for these will be essential. Doddington Hall is having a Spring Bulbs pageant this year. There are many snowdrops in the garden at Belton House. Of course as we all know, just driving around through the Lincolnshire countryside one can often come across carpets of snowdrops, especially in old churchyards and woodland, so wherever you live, do get out and enjoy the season. Hackthorn Hall is just opening for one Sunday of snowdrops.

Final snowdrop opening as a tribute to Cliff Curtis who sadly died in May.
Cliff and Joan created their garden over many years along with the help of their daughter Sharron. They have opened their garden for the NGS for 28 years and where one of the first to open for snowdrops in 1992 for the NGS. The garden behind the cottage is overflowing with snowdrops, crocus, hellebores and many other bulbs and early flowering plants.
Cliff was bitten by the snowdrop bug about 35 years ago, 'Galanthomania' was in its infancy then. Cliff quickly and quietly became one of the most modest, yet knowledgeable and widely respected galanthophiles in the country. A number of snowdops associated with Cliff are G. Peardrop, Chandlers Green Tip, Little Joan, Tutu, Squire Burroughs, Mill House, Sharron Louise, Hacconby Green, Hacconby Early, Chapel Green Tip, Orchard Cottage and of course 'Cliff Curtis' which was named in Cliff's honour in 2003 by visiting Galanthophiles.
homemade soup and cakes will be available.

The garden will also be open by appointment during February and March. Contact Sharron on: sharron21white@gmail.com
